We’re all strange in our own way. I’m no exception. I have a healthy respect for feet, gag at the sight of a dog having its toenails cut, prefer not to eat bananas that have been cut vertically, and would rather have a knife at a gun fight than a fish on my line. Fish are my phobia. Yet …

I’ve swam with them under the influence in the Pacific Ocean; on a dare in the Atlantic Ocean; naked in the Arctic Ocean; and with a pod of Dolphins in the Indian Ocean…in the Amazon with Piranha; in both Mississippi Rivers; in the “Anaconda River” in South America – though I wouldn’t have, had I been told the name beforehand…swamps in Lanark County…places people without a fish phobia would think twice before diving in.

I’ve been fortunate enough to stay out of jail. However, I have survived vehicle rollovers, been chased off of the most secretive military base in the world, Area 51; been greeted by AK-47s at a military checkpoint in Kashmir; escaped a near carjacking in Puerto Rico; and survived a gastrointestinal infection in Columbia.

I’ve made great friends living with Gwitch’n Indians and Inuvialuit Eskimos; learned Spanish from a young girl in a Peruvian market; dog sledded in Tuktoyaktuk; ridden across Canada and the US by motorcycle; taken bush planes across the Mackenzie River; circumnavigated Australia in an old hatchback without air conditioning or radio; even had an old van start on fire as I pulled off a long stretch of ice-road in the Beaufort Sea.

Anything I’ve been able to stop moving long enough to bite, I’ve eaten: Crocodile, Musk Ox, Caribou, Piranha, Musk Rat, and Muktuk, even Chicken Foot Soup and Guinea Pig…those are just the bits I know about…and only those I’ve managed to keep down.

In the moments between moments, I’ve managed to trick professors and professionals alike. I’ve been flown by helicopter to motorcycle accidents as a Flight Paramedic, reduced dislocations and delivered babies in a small Outpost Clinic as an RN; even traveled to Pakistan with a Disaster Team in the wake of an Earthquake..

Why photography?

‘Cause ya wouldn’t believe me if I told ya.
